Web so, at the end of the line, you can get 240v between the two 120 lines, but you can't use either 120v by itself. Web 1 so long as you have both ground and neutral, and the neutral is rated for the breaker capacity it should be ok. We would pull 4 #12 conductors 2 hot, a neutral, and a shared.
